Cusk has triumphed in the completion of this masterly trilogy. A stark, modern, adamantine new skyscraper on the literary horizon. Composed of a series of conversations, it is captivating and incredibly well written.
Coolly detached, narcotically gorgeous. Like all great art, this novel consistently eludes us in leaps of grace and daring. Modern life has rarely been articulated with such compression and epigrammatic precision.

These are texts, finally, to read and revisit, lean, oracular, irreducible. The effect is of watching an oracle divine fearsome and inscrutable truths from on high, then render them into stories fit for mortals. With her typical acerbic wit, Ms Cusk skewers the pretensions of the literary world while simultaneously upholding the intrinsic value of literature—no small feat.
A daring bonfire of hypocrisies and emotions. An object lesson in rigor, elegance, and fury. You're absolutely right, Glen. Quite right, Henry! You may be onto something there, Glen. Ol' man Waldrop, furthermore, hails from them parts, I reckon Arkansas, to be precise. See my seminal work of : "Arkansas - Is? Adventures of a Transcendental Eminence ". Yes - I had your wonderful tome right here in my mind - as well as simultaneouly on my desk - when suddenly It disappeared.
From both "places". Is the Pope Catholic? I can't speak for Glen, Joshua, but as for me - not at all. I haven't read the book. But I feel strangely as if the book has. Is this possible? It seems that nothing is impossible for this magical book of juju. We're being facetious here, but I don't want to make light of the award itself.
I think it's a wonderful thing that Keith Waldrop has won it. But the award statement is not a very accurate reflection on Waldrop or his work. Understood, Henry. It is all pretty ridiculous. There is no magic bullet that will make people all of the sudden appreciate Waldrop. This probably just means the people who like his work will have their taste validated, and the people who don't like his work or don't care will go on not liking and not caring.
Maybe they should make him poet laureate? Or let him take over Prairie Home Companion! C'mon Poetry Foundation, can't you make that happen? I'm looking forward to reading the book, it sounds fascinating, but--how has he avoided the limelight? He teaches at an Ivy League school, runs a press, gives readings, travels the world promoting his work--how is that different from poets who seek the limelight?
Who is an example of a limelight seeker? Billy Collins? Ron Silliman? Anyone who blogs here? Why is it bad to seek or saintly to avoid? Hope, someone else can probably explain this better than I can, but I'll try.
To a degree, of course, you're right : he's a poet, after all. But he never grandstands. Log In Sign Up.

Expanding and integrating this research, this experimental study tests whether travel experiences, with eudaimonic elements of self-discovery and a sense of meaning, lead to these benefits and tests a proposed process where these experiences influence personal changes that subsequently create societal benefits.

Results of structural equation modeling indicate that philanthropic effects of travel were initiated by the eudaimonic self-reflections via eudaimonic affect and self-transcendent outcomes. This study contributes to the research linking eudaimonia and travel and provides insights into the ways that the travel industry can be harnessed as a potent tool for promoting personal meaning, self-transcendence, and prosocial outcomes. It begins by setting up the context of the universe in which we live. This is done by establishing the foundations of cosmogenesis, chaos theory, and systems thinking. The paper then examines human development through the lens of Montessori and the transpersonal psychologists Carl Jung and Abraham Maslow. Self-transcendence is proposed as both the final path of human development and the intersection of the primal paradox.

That question is explored through both the neurological and Buddhist lens. This exploration finishes by introducing neurophenomenology and its implications for the Montessori classroom. This paper presents an overview of what we currently understand about this transpersonal potential and the positive perceptual and behavioural changes that typically accompany its realisation.

Worldviews and their Orientations to Transcendence. A distinctive feature of our humanity is our experience of two quite different modes of consciousness: self-awareness and self-transcendence.
Together they lead us to construct a worldview that includes some orientation to a transcendent Together they lead us to construct a worldview that includes some orientation to a transcendent dimension. This paper explores why this is so and describes ten such orientations — mysticism, panpsychism, pantheism, panentheism, theism, deism, atheism, physicalism, apatheism, and agnosticism — with brief reference to the place of each in the history of human thought.
These are graphically located on a circular "orientations map" in which each shades into the orientation on either side.
Although additional orientations could be identified if we wished to be more discriminating, for purposes of this paper these ten will suffice to illustrate the range of possibilities.
